Best new comedy of 2006-2007, May 18, 2007

Bizarrely, NBC debuted two new series in 2006-2007 that were behind-the-scenes looks at fictional TV shows that bore astonishing resemblences to SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE. Aaron Sorkin's STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP, the more highly touted of the two, did set its fictional SNL on the West Coast, but never really caught on with critics or with many fans and was eventually cancelled. On the other hand, 30 ROCK was an immediate hit with critics and gradually built more and more of a fan base. Though the ratings were never especially strong, NBC has perhaps the best track record of any current network for sticking with quality shows and attempting to nurture a fan base (on any other network both 30 ROCK and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS would have been cancelled well before the end of the season). Hopefully more fans will discover this superb show and its long term future will be assured. While the Sorkin series had very tenuous SNL credentials, 30 ROCK's are iron clad. It was created and produced by SNL veteran Tina Fey, who along with Gilda Radner is possibly the most gifted female performer the show has produced. Lorne Michaels serves as a producer, Tracy Morgan is one of the major stars on the show, and a long line of SNL performers appear as guest stars on the show. Rachel Dratch has appeared in so many episodes (albeit as a number of different characters, from Liz Taylor to a Cat Wrangler) that she could almost be considered a regular. It wouldn't be quite correct to call this a SNL spin off, but it comes as close as possible to being that without actually being one.
The show started off as very funny from the very beginning, but it evidenced one of the marks of a good show: it got better and better as it went along. While the writing and the jokes are sharp from the very beginning, the use of the characters got really good in the second half. One of the marks of a good show is that the second half of the debut season is better than the first half. And this one certainly did.
The ensemble cast is absolutely first rate, but three people really stand out. Tina Fey is not only the driving force behind the show, she is delightful as Liz Lemon, the head writer for THE GIRLIE SHOW, the fictional series they all work on. Alec Baldwin is shockingly good as Jack Donaghy, the NBC executive who oversees. He will be certain to get an Emmy nomination, something he will definitely deserve. But for me the funniest thing on the show is Tracy Morgan as an insane (literally) movie actor who joins the show. The overall atmosphere is one of surreal chaos.
I hope the show really takes off with fans this coming season. NBC's Thursday night line up of shows is perhaps the best group of really intelligent comic series ever. Back when they promoted "Must See TV" (which I never watched), they relied mainly on sit coms filmed in front of live audiences. But the current line up features filmed comedies that are smart, funny, and a hoot to watch. And for me they are really are, in contrast to the FRIENDS era, shows that I really feel I must watch.

Okay..
I think TV stinks. A good friend of mine kept trying to get me to watch this show and I just wasn't interested. For some reason I picked up this set and in a matter of a few days blasted through the whole season. This is ridiculously funny AND intelligent stuff. I am absolutely stunned that the lead actress , Tina Fey, is also the creator AND the writer!! If you don't know just how insane that is....all I can say is its humbling to witness such an incredible talent. If your IQ reaches triple digits you will LOVE this show. Like all great sitcoms and this IS great...it operates on several levels and has multiple story lines working that all integrate perfectly. The acting is wonderful as the cast was assembled well and I must add that Alec Baldwin is just so funny its shocking.

I command you to watch it, it will tickle your innards...

Last Tuesday Gavin Degraw came to the radio station. He brought his very own blend of silliness and entertained us all (including about 40 listeners) with some kick ass tunes. Then we all ate Chipotle burritos, and they were delicious.

I am a long-time fan of his, but had never seen him live and certainly never met him. I was pretty stoked about the whole thing, but just walked around and took pictures. Hearing the music was all I wanted.

He hung out with us for like two hours. That is like, way longer than his contract states he has to.....his record guy was literally pushing him out the door..

He personally met, took pictures with, and signed autographs with every single person in the damn room. The best part was that when a new person would walk up to him, he would say "Hi, I'm Gavin, pleasure to meet you", and shake their hand AS THOUGH THEY DID NOT KNOW HIS NAME WAS GAVIN! So sweet....

Thanks for coming Gavin.....

No one says "shooting" or "massacre", just "four sixteen".

I am from the state of Virgina. I have friends that went to tech, some are still there.

No one I know left the school out of fear for their lives. We all know we can't live that way. No matter what happens. If we did give in to the fear, he would win. His mission to incite fear and anger would have prevailed. In the end, it did not.

The top hat is where he stuffs the rest of his raging liberal ego, because it is just too big to carry around without a container of some sort. That shit gets heavy after a while. Can you see a bit of it dribbling out of the sides? I can.

At least it is a very fashionable container.

What is a Healthy Lifestyle?

According to a study by Michigan State University, a healthy lifestyle is defined by four basic criteria:
Not smoking

Holding weight down

Eating right

Exercising
Of the 153,000 respondents, only 3% participated in all four of what are termed healthy lifestyle characteristics.

“We have millions of people now going through adult life leading unhealthy lifestyles and a medical system that can treat illnesses and keep you alive longer than ever before,” said Mathew Reeves, a Michigan State University epidemiologist. “If we don’t turn this around, the costs to society are going to be crippling.”

What can be done to help people change?

Everyone talks about achieving it, but most people have plenty of excuses as to why they can’t, won’t, or don’t want to change their current status. The most common excuse people make for not trying to have a healthy lifestyle is “a lack of time.” Have you ever said to yourself, “Oh, I’m tired, I don’t have time to exercise?” or “I don’t feel like cooking dinner tonight; let’s just get some fast food.”

Yes Dorothy, excuses are real and they are contagious.

What can you do in 10 minutes or less?

More than you think. In a brief 10 minute window you can release tension, prevent future frustrations, get your blood flowing, etc. In fact, here are 50 things you can do. With time out as an excuse, what are you going to begin doing differently tomorrow? I don't care what it is, the point is, just do something!

Brush your teeth

Do 15 sit-ups

Read the health news headlines of the day

Straighten your posture

Eat an apple

Stand up and stretch

Put a package of oatmeal in your pocket or purse for a healthy breakfast or snack

Skip your late evening grocery store run

Read this list over again and count how many things pertain to you
These things take no time at all but they all could ensure a positive day and a healthier lifestyle. How many of these do you or can you do in a day? What other things can you add to the list?

Whatever you choose to do, make your day healthier and happier. If you can, do the same for someone else too, because, after all, it’s about a healthy lifestyle!

It's cool to know stuff about someone before you meet them and be able to talk about those things, but there is no substitute for quality time spent together getting to know one another. The owner of Blue Ridge Mountain Sports (hugely respected 30 yr old gear shop in VB) offered me a job this past weekend. How cool is that? This guy wants me to work for him and he barely even knows me! He said "I like your attitude and spirit", you can totally tell that he is an old hippie/gear head, but really nice and he loves his shop, and being outdoors. He also climbs and so do his two sons. That is how we got into a conversation: climbing. He says I should start trying to get sponsored next year. Not sure if that is in the cards, but a lovely thought nonetheless.

It's quite tempting to throw all my shit in a truck, move down here and take it! But I have to concentrate on school. It is one of my goals though, to spend some time in a gear shop. I can learn a lot, and still get the gear I need cheaply without having to beg a bunch of companies/people I don't know for free shit.

I keep forgetting that I still have plenty of time to do everything that I want to do. Mostly because I am responsible for only myself and my pup (gladly responsible for her, I might add). She is my co-pilot. I wouldn't trade her for anything.

Freedom is amazing.

I will do only positive things with it and make the right choices.

Yes, she is a pit bull. No, she does not eat babies. Not even one.

This year will be a big one for us, and one of the many goals is to start serious training with Nadine. She needs it. When we are at a good point in her training, we will shoot for this. This is important for me as a renter, simply because Nadine is a pit, she needs to be better than other dogs. Having her CGC will allow me to prove to a real estate company or landlord that my dog is properly trained and that training has been evaluated and approved by a professional.

Also, The great people over at PBRC's Pitbull-L forum are big proponents of NFL (no free lunch) training, it is here. The whole idea is about Nadine earning everything she wants and needs. Nadine is a "fraidy dog" (but still incredibly sweet and after LOTS of socialization in the last 3 years, will approach people to give kisses) and I am hoping to help build her confidence. Specifically, her issues are with strange booming noises (loud or not), digital cameras and flashlights that are turned on, and the dark. Yes, my dog is actually afraid of the dark. She also prefers to sleep under the bed, or covered up with a blanket. She basically prefers to hide. We will work on easing these fears through desensitization training and NFL.

It allows your dog to have some say in her life. It also increases her self-confidence in a positive way while giving you back control. All the crap I bought: (this IS a big deal, and post worthy because I am quite poor)

-Small (16 oz) Camel Bak Polycarb bottle (this replaces the lost one).
-Smartwool socks (yes they were 13 dollars, I am an idiot who buys 13 dollar socks. Tony started it, dammit! I am addicted to these socks and I can't stop! I now own 2 pair.)

In the past four days I have cleaned out 3 walk in closets and a huge attic FULL of stuff. I then proceeded to take two Chevy suburban size loads of said stuff (toys, clothes, books, rugs and misc. decorative items) to the Virginia Beach Goodwill. My dad was understandably perplexed, yet pleased that he did not have to do it all himself this spring. Hey, school is out, I can help my dad, stay busy and be productive.
